Ballots are still being counted in SJ County. Here’s a look at where some important races stand

The San Joaquin County Registrar of Voters is continuing to process the hundreds of thousands of ballots that have been cast in the county for the 2024 general election. 

Though larger races like the U.S. presidency can typically be called within hours following polls closing, winners in local elections may not become clear for days or even weeks as vote-by-mail ballots continue to be tallied.

Many of the races in SJ County are separated by only a few hundred to a few thousand votes, with more than 80,000 ballots still being processed. 

Registrar officials began releasing county ballot counts around 8 p.m. on Election Day after the polls closed, with updated tallies about every two hours until all vote-by-mail ballots received by Saturday and those cast in person on or before Tuesday were processed. The registrar then went to a schedule of releasing ballot counts three times per week as counting continues.

Nearly 379,000 county residents are registered voters, according to the registrar. Voter turnout for for this general election cycle sits at about 68%.

According to local election data, more than 175,000 ballots had been counted in San Joaquin County as of Friday evening — a jump of just over 20,000 since the county’s previous report the day before — and there are about 86,000 more to be tallied. That number could increase as vote-by-mail ballots continue to stream in over the next few days. All ballots postmarked by Nov. 5 and received by the county registrar within seven days of Election Day will be counted.

There also are about 4,500 ballots that have been challenged due to issues such as the registrar being unable to verify signatures or receiving ballots with unsigned identification envelopes that could ultimately be processed and counted as these voters are given an opportunity to correct problems with their ballots.

Counties must finish counting and certify their election results by Dec. 3.
