With overnight temperatures hovering near freezing in Stockton, the city has announced the opening of two overnight warming zones to provide relief for residents without access to heat or proper shelter.
Following a series of atmospheric river storms, Stockton is expected to dry out on Friday. But the latest rains ushered in colder weather, and the city is now facing several nights with low temperatures in the the mid- to low 30s.
Between Friday night and early Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service is predicting lows between 33 and 37 degrees, with the coldest nights expected on Saturday and Sunday.
On those nights, warming zones will be available at the Arnold Rue Community Center, 5758 Lorraine Ave., and the Stribley Community Center, 1760 East Sonora St. Check-in begins at 8 each night, with check-out by 7 the following morning.
The warming zones are open to everyone in need of protection from the cold. Heated gymnasiums will be used as rest areas, and those staying overnight will be provided with water and snacks.
Officials note that these locations do not offer full shelter services, such as medical care or meals, and they encourage those in need of additional services to call 211 or reach out to local shelters.
For those seeking more comprehensive assistance, the following shelters are available:
- Gospel Center Rescue Mission, 445 South San Joaquin St.
- St. Mary’s Community Services, 545 West Sonora St.
The availability of warming zones may change based on weather conditions, usage and community needs, officials said.
Residents can find updates on warming zones, emergency preparedness resources and weather forecasts on websites for the city of Stockton and the San Joaquin County Office of Emergency Services.
