A Stockton driver was shot by a San Joaquin County sheriff’s deputy following a traffic stop Tuesday morning, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Around 11:30 a.m., deputies responded to a disturbance near Moon Avenue, where a vehicle believed to be involved in the incident fled the area, sheriff spokesperson Keri Mayoya said.
Deputies stopped the vehicle blocks away at Wisconsin and Michigan avenues. During the stop, a deputy saw the driver with what appeared to be a firearm. The deputy fired, striking the driver, Mayoya said.
Deputies immediately provided medical aid. The driver was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Mayoya said.
The Sheriff’s Office declined to comment on additional details, including the driver’s age, gender and whether they were in fact armed.
“This is an active investigation,” Mayoya said. “What has been shared is all the information we can provide at this time.”
