Retired San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Rex died Aug. 1 after nearly eight years of service to the agency and community.

Rex passed peacefully in the arms of his handler and family, with whom he had lived since retiring, sheriff’s spokesperson Heather Brent said.

Throughout his career, Rex worked alongside his handler to protect fellow deputies and residents across San Joaquin County. The Sheriff’s Office remembered him for his loyalty, courage and dedication.

“K-9 Rex was much more than a working dog — he was a trusted partner, a protector, and a beloved member of his family,” Brent said in a statement. “His legacy of loyalty and sacrifice will not be forgotten.”

The Sheriff’s Office is not releasing additional information about Rex’s handler out of respect for the family’s privacy.
