Delta College and Stocktonia will host “Stories that Matter,” a conversation with a group of the nation’s best journalists, to examine what national politics and immigration policy mean for San Joaquin County. See how you can attend.

Update: The lineup for this week’s “Stories that Matter” panel has changed. The panel will include Pulitzer Prize-winners Caitlin Dickerson of The Atlantic, Anna Wolfe of Mississippi Today and Nicole Carroll, former editor in chief of USA TODAY and executive director of NEWSWELL.

Media organizations facing new levels of scrutiny and threats of liability. A profound shift in national politics and immigration policy. And a community where local journalism is at risk.

Those are just a few of the topics on the agenda for a landmark event in Stockton next month. It’s free to the public. There, three celebrated reporters will join local media and college students for a wide-ranging conversation about journalism, policy and humanity.

The three reporters, Pulitzer Prize honorees from newsrooms across the country, will join students and journalists from the event’s local partners: Stocktonia and San Joaquin Delta College

“Stories That Matter: Award-Winning Journalists on Reporting in a New Era,” is part of a larger national series of “Pulitzer on the Road” events.

The Feb. 13 conversation features:

  • Caitlin Dickerson, a staff writer for The Atlantic, who previously worked as a national immigration reporter for The New York Times. Dickerson won a Pulitzer Prize in 2023 for her explanatory reporting piece that highlighted the abuses experienced by migrant children separated from their parents.
  • Nicole Carroll, while top editor of The Arizona Republic, led a project on the proposed U.S. border wall that won a 2018 Pulitzer Prize. She also led breaking news coverage recognized as Pulitzer Prize finalists in 2012 and 2014. She is member of the Pulitzer Prize board and hosts its Pulitzer on the Road podcast.
  • Anna Wolfe, who has been working as investigative reporter for Mississippi Today since 2018. Wolfe’s reporting on the Mississippi welfare fraud scandal involving a former governor and NFL star Brett Favre earned her a Pulitzer Prize for local reporting in 2023.
