DEVELOPING: The 2022 primary election is (unofficially) over
Unofficial election results are in for the June 7 primary following several weeks of vote counting and delays due to issues with mail-in ballot barcodes.
Unofficial election results are in for the June 7 primary, following several weeks of vote counting and delays due to issues with mail-in ballot barcodes. And while certification of the election is still eight days away, the leading candidates can relax a bit or plan for November.
The San Joaquin County Registrar of Voters shows that all 109,832 ballots cast have been tallied. San Joaquin County has until July 7 to certify the results.
Some of the races were decided by voting on June 7, others move on to the general election in November. One of the most bitterly-contested races of the primary were settled, as Ron Freitas has defeated incumbent Tori Verber-Salazar to become the next San Joaquin County District Attorney. Verber Salazar was running for a third term.

Congressional Seat to be Decided in the Fall
The biggest prize of the primary will be decided in the Fall. As expected, Democratic incumbent Congressman Josh Harder will meet Republican Tom Patti in the runoff. In a statement released by his campaign, Harder said in part, “I’m grateful and honored that our community has put their faith in me once again. As a new dad, I know how rising costs are crushing our families, and we desperately need more common sense leaders to actually get things done.”
Patti, a sitting San Joaquin County Supervisor, will be trying to wrest the seat from Harder in the new 9th Congressional District. A Republican hasn’t represented the Greater Stockton Area in the U.S. Congress since 2007.
“I’m glad to see that the tallies have been done, and I’m humble and grateful for the level of support I received,” Patti said. “I feel voters are speaking out that they deserve better than what they are getting with the current leadership in Washington.”
Close Supervisor Race Forces Runoff in November
The closest race of the primary was for the SJ County District 4 seat. Leader Steve Ding and Steve Colangelo are separated by 291 votes and will advance to November. The six candidates changed positions several times through the released counts.
“You always have that doubt in the back of your mind, Two weeks ago, I was running third, and running third and up to last night it was anyone’s ball game,” Ding said. “I’m very humbled and grateful for the final outcome.”
