The Stockton Ports gave students a day to remember Tuesday, combining baseball, community and education at Banner Island Ballpark.
The annual Education Day brought hundreds of students from across the region to enjoy a day out of the classroom, filled with activities, food and, of course, baseball.
“Events like this help embed our kids in the community,” said Jesus Rodriguez, senior manager of Education San Joaquin. “They’re seeing local businesses, connecting with organizations and getting exposure beyond just the classroom.”
For many students, it was their first time attending a live baseball game. April Jacobs, principal at Central Elementary School in Tracy, said the opportunity was meaningful for her students.
“We asked them who had been to a game before, and many hadn’t,” Jacobs said. “They were excited just to be here, and they deserve it.”
Jordan Feneck, general manager of the Stockton Ports, said the team’s goal is to create meaningful experiences for students.
“We want kids to come out here, have a great time and see how much they can learn through the game — whether it’s math, teamwork or just being part of something bigger in their community,” Feneck said.
The field trip also included a lesson in winning. The Stockton Ports defeated the Modesto Nuts 13-2 in Game 1 of their six-game series. It marked the first matchup of the season in what may be the final chapter of a 209 baseball rivalry, as Modesto’s future in the California League remains uncertain.
The Ports improved to 11-5, turning three double plays and riding five shutout innings from starting pitcher Nathan Dettmer. Offensive highlights included a 105-mph, line-drive double by shortstop Jared Sprague-Lott, a multi-RBI performance from shortstop Ali Camarillo and strong contributions from center fielder Pedro Pineda, out fielder Cesar Franco and shortstop Gunner Gouldsmith.
Whether it was the home runs, the hot dogs or the moment, students got to cheer under a clear blue sky. Education Day gave young fans more than just a game — it gave them a memory.
