A World War II veteran and former physician celebrated his 103rd birthday this week. Marvin Lee Lykins was lauded by family, fellow veterans and community members at the Oakmont of Brookside senior living facility. I got to speak with him, his daughter and others about his living legacy and lessons learned over many years.

And in other news, three San Joaquin County sheriff’s deputies were injured when two patrol vehicles crashed, and two women were charged in a massive meth bust on Interstate 5.

Remember to look for the bright spots when the weather or the news feel gloomy. Photojournalist Annie Barker did just that as she captured images of wildlife and people enjoying a sunny day at Louis Park during this foggy January.

As always, thanks for starting your day with us.
