There’s fresh energy in our newsroom.

Stocktonia is proud to welcome Shaylee Navarro, a California Local News Fellow who will be reporting with us for the next two years through UC Berkeley’s fellowship program. The initiative connects early-career journalists with community newsrooms that serve underrepresented audiences, a vital step in keeping local news strong and sustainable.

A first-generation Mexican American from Utah, Shaylee says Stockton reminds her of home — diverse, resilient and full of stories worth telling. She’s already hit the ground running with stories on Stockton’s handling of DEI funds, a Tahitian dance festival and more. We couldn’t be happier to have her on the team.

Also in this edition: San Joaquin County’s registrar details how votes will be counted in next month’s special election, local families face new food insecurity challenges from the federal shutdown, and our Halloween events guide has everything from haunted houses to costume contests.

We’re glad you’re starting your morning with us.
