Good morning, Stockton.

Before moving on to the rest of the city’s business this week, Stockton leaders paused to recognize an issue that continues to affect families across the community.

The Stockton City Council declared June as Gun Violence Awareness Month, honoring victims, survivors and the organizations working to reduce violence throughout the city. The proclamation shines a light on local groups that spend much of the year supporting affected families and helping prevent violence before it happens.

The recognition came during a busy week across San Joaquin County. Election officials are moving through one of the fastest ballot counts in recent memory, and early results suggest all three Stockton City Council incumbents could be headed for November runoffs.

For hockey fans, Thursday brought welcome news: the Stockton Thunder name is officially returning. The announcement revives a brand that still carries strong recognition around the city years after the original team left town.

We’re also following the guilty plea of a Manteca daycare operator charged in the death of an infant in her care. And if you’re planning the weekend, our latest Things to Do guide includes Ports baseball, FatherFest, Taste of the Mile and more.

Thanks for starting your morning with us.
