Stockton police detectives ended 2024 the same way they rang in 2025: working to solve a new homicide.
The two killings began before sunset on New Year’s Eve.
Officers discovered a 42-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds about 4 p.m. Tuesday at March Lane and Holiday Drive in the Valley Oak District. He was taken to a hospital, where he died, police said.
The San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office on Thursday identified the victim as Michael Pruitt of Stockton.
Detectives were looking for a suspect in the fatal shooting but offered no description.
The following morning, police responded to a shooting around 11 a.m. in the 2400 block of Gareth Circle in Stockton’s Valley Oak section. They found a 47-year-old woman, who had been mortally wounded. She was rushed to a hospital, where she died.
The Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Stockton resident Latoya Scrivens.
Authorities later identified the suspect in the slaying as Jkwon Williams, the victim’s son. The 20-year-old was taken into custody within a few hours of the New Year’s Day shooting and booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on suspicion of voluntary manslaughter and weapons charges, police said.
