The driver of a street sweeper who after rear-ending a tractor-trailer in Lathrop was identified by authorities Wednesday as a 40-year-old Modesto man.

Daniel Purdy, whose name was released by the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office, was headed south on State Route 99 about 8:27 a.m. Monday at the off-ramp to Lathrop Road.

The California Highway Patrol said Purdy’s vehicle was estimated to be traveling at 35 to 45 mph when it veered onto the right shoulder and struck the truck, which was parked out of the traffic lanes. After the crash, the sweeper came to rest in the traffic lane.

Purdy was not wearing a seatbelt, officers said. He was rushed to San Joaquin General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No one in the tractor-trailer was injured.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but alcohol or drug use is not believed to have been factor, according to the CHP.
