Police fatally shot a 19-year-old Stockton man who they say brandished a gun after a chaotic foot pursuit, ignoring repeated demands not to touch the weapon.
Police elaborated Wednesday in a social media post what transpired during the incident that began when officers approached a double-parked car near Doray Court and Pixie Drive.
A man — later identified as Rocco Robinson — got out of the car as officers approached about 6:08 p.m. Tuesday. Police told Robinson to stay put, yet he did not comply with the order, authorities said.
Officers then tried to take control of Robinson but said he resisted, adding that as he did, he dropped a large, illegal high-capacity magazine loaded with ammunition. Then he took off running, police said.
As officers chased after Robinson, they say he dropped a handgun, kicking it in front of him as he stooped to pick it up. Police say he then raced to retrieve the gun despite their warnings to stay away from it.
Authorities say Robinson again ignored police orders and picked up the handgun. With the suspect now rearmed, officers opened fire.
Police administered medical aide to Robinson at the scene before emergency services took him by ambulance to a hospital, where he was declared dead.
In addition to the handgun, which police said was loaded, and the high-capacity magazine dropped at the car, police said they also recovered a 17-round ammunition clip near Robinson’s body.
As is typical in police shootings, the Stockton Police Department has initiated a multi-agency investigation with the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Bureau of Investigations, the California Department of Justice and the San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office.
