A San Joaquin County sheriff’s sergeant died suddenly on the job Tuesday due to a medical emergency, officials say.
The Sheriff’s Office announced the on-duty death of Sgt. Jason Whelen, 40, on social media Wednesday afternoon.
Officials praised Whelen’s nearly two decades of service with the Sheriff’s Office and described him as a proud husband and devoted father to four children.
“The Sheriff’s Office mourns the loss of a respected leader, a valued partner, and a cherished member of our law enforcement family,” sheriff’s officials said on social media.
No specific details about the nature of the medical issue that caused Whelen’s death were provided in the department’s announcement. A Sheriff’s Office spokesperson did not provide any additional details about Whelen’s condition.
Whelen, a 19-year veteran of the department, experienced a medical emergency during his shift Tuesday, officials said in the department’s announcement.
“Despite the immediate response and extensive life-saving efforts by fellow deputies and medical personnel, Sergeant Whelen tragically passed away,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
Whelen began his career with the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office in the fall of 2007 as a deputy, before being promoted to sergeant in 2013.
“Throughout his career, he served this community with honor, integrity, and compassion,” the department said.
Officials said Whelen is remembered for his kindness, steady leadership, deep faith in Jesus Christ and an infectious smile that brought positivity to those around him.
“Our thoughts are with Sergeant Whelen’s family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time,” officials said.
