A cane-swinging clash between two seniors in Stockton over the weekend escalated into a bizarre street showdown — and even involved a car — before police stepped in and arrested both men, authorities said.

Officers were called around 4:10 p.m. Saturday to the 700 block of east Martin Luther King Boulevard in the Seaport District on reports of a physical altercation between two men who, despite their age, weren’t exactly acting retired from trouble.

The Stockton Police Department said the pair traded blows using a cane during the dispute. And the chaos didn’t stop there: One of the men tried to ram the other with a car, police said, turning the fight into what officers labeled an assault with a deadly weapon.

Both men were taken into custody. John Greathouse, 67, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and vandalism, police said. James Heard, 69, was also booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, according to online police logs.

The department did not say what sparked the confrontation between the men. No additional injuries were reported.

Both men remain jailed in the San Joaquin County jail and are expected to appear in court Tuesday.
