Caltrans is inviting the public to help choose the aesthetic theme for a major bridge replacement project along Interstate Highway 5 in Stockton.

The agency launched a public survey to gather feedback on three proposed design themes for the Stockton Channel Viaduct project. The survey will remain open through Oct. 8 and is available online.

The survey follows nearly a year of input from the Stockton Channel Viaduct Project Community Aesthetics Advisory Committee, formed in August of last year. The 10-member group was tasked with recommending visual design elements that reflect local identity and community values.

Caltrans said the goal is to incorporate community perspectives into the project’s design while also ensuring feasibility within budget and policy constraints.

“Caltrans encourages those interested to take a moment to vote for a favorite design
theme, as feedback will help shape the look and feel of this significant project,” the agency said in a statement.

The Stockton Channel Viaduct project calls for replacing both the northbound and southbound I-5 viaduct bridges to address structural deficiencies, including deteriorating concrete decks and aging superstructures. The upgrades aim to improve long-term safety, increase load capacity for commercial vehicles, and support efficient movement of goods.

Further information on the project is available on Caltrans’ website. Public inquiries can be directed to district10publicaffairs@dot.ca.gov.
