More rain is on the way to greater Stockton — and this round could bring heavy showers with a flood watch.

After the first in a series of atmospheric river storms delivered a weekend punch of precipitation, a new round is rolling in Monday night and lasting into Wednesday, the National Weather Service office in Sacramento said. The latest forecast predicts the bulk of the rain beginning after 7 tonight.

A full day of chilly rain will be on tap Tuesday, with a high temperature of 56 and wind gusts up to 26 mph, the NWS reported.

Since Friday, Stockton received a quarter to a half-inch of rain. But this next storm could bring 1 to 2 inches more, NWS meteorologist Sara Purdue said. As such, a flood watch is in effect until 4 a.m. Tuesday amid expected periods of moderate to heavy rainfall.

San Joaquin County’s growers could certainly use the rain. Even with the recent precipitation, the county has racked up only 4.6 inches of rain since Oct. 1, what the weather service designates as the start of a new water year. Normal for this far into the season would be 7.4 inches.

In what could remedy those numbers, a third storm is expected this week. After a brief clearing on Wednesday, an additional half-inch to an inch of rain is slated to fall on Stockton on Thursday and Friday, forecasters predict. And after, a break — finally.

“There’s (no rain) in the forecast period seven days out,” Purdue said. After Friday, “things seem to calm down for a couple of days.”

Stockton should dry out again just in time for the weekend.
