After a brief spell of sunny skies and warm temperatures, “active weather” is returning to Stockton.

Highs for the past week have hovered in the high 60s to low 70s, with temperatures topping out at 74 on Wednesday. The same mercury reading is expected Friday as meteorologists say “seasonably warm temperatures” will continue before a cooldown begins.

Stocktonians should enjoy their Saturday, which is predicted to be sunny with a high temperature of 70. But by Saturday night, rain is in the forecast. The National Weather Service predicts a 30% chance of showers after 10 p.m., with rain likely extending into Sunday morning.

The chance for rain increases to 70% Sunday, mainly between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., with thunderstorms possible in the late afternoon. The precipitation is also bringing cooler temperatures; Sunday’s high will only reach 59 degrees, the weather service predicts.

By Sunday night, the chance of rain dips to 50%. But NWS modeling shows active weather continuing through early March, with an above-average precipitation outlook.

With agriculture playing a big role in San Joaquin County’s economy, the rain will likely be welcomed by farmers.

Between Oct. 1 and Feb. 27, Stockton has received 7.91 inches of rain, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports. That’s somewhat shy of the average to date of 9.59 inches. Early February storms significantly boosted the total, and the next round of rains could potentially bring the region up to normal.
