Stockton and San Joaquin County are bracing for heavy rains and wind gusts as storm systems is set to cut through the region in the coming days heading into the holidays.
Much of the valley was on flood watch Friday.
“A Flood Watch has been issued for the Sac Valley, northern San Joaquin Valley, and Sierra Nevada + adjacent foothills from Saturday evening through next week Friday,” the National Weather Service said in a social media post.
The National Weather Service cautioned travelers heading into the mountains of heavy snow.
Atmospheric river conditions will travel through the region this weekend, the weather said. An abundance of heavy rain and snow are expected through at least Christmas Day.
Widespread dense fog was prevalent Friday morning before 11 a.m., with temperature highs only hovering around 56 degrees, and finishing the day with gusts of light winds and showers heading into early evening.
Conditions will remain cloudy with more showers likely through the weekend and Christmas, with highs once again only reaching the 50s and continued light winds moving through the valley, the weather service says.
The Sierra Nevadas are on a winter storm watch.
Heavy snow fall of up to a foot is possible above 5,500 feet, the weather service, with 2 to 4 feet at the highest peaks, and expected gusts as high as 45 mph.
‘A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for the Sierra and southern Cascades from Tuesday night through Friday morning,” the weather service said in a social media. “Totals & timing are still uncertain as the storm evolves. Heavy mountain snow will impact holiday travel.”
