Areas of Northern California and the Central Valley are on flood watch going into next week as periods of heavy rainfall are expected through Monday, the National Weather Service says.
Areas of the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys, including Stockton, and the adjacent foothills are under flood watch through 11 a.m. Sunday.
“Minor flooding in low lying areas is expected due to moderate to heavy rain moving across the area,” the National Weather Service said on social media early Sunday morning. “Never drive across flooded roads!”
The weather service warns of urban and small-stream flooding due to excessive rainfall, as well as minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas.
“Additional moderate to heavy rainfall will result in continued flooding risk,” the national weather service said.
In the next 24 hours, the weather service says areas below 4,000 feet in Northern California could also be impacted other hazardous conditions, such as rockslides and mudslides in the foothills and mountains and scattered thunderstorms with locally heavy rain.
Area residents and travelers are being advised to take precautions, including having an evacuations plan and emergency kit, never driving across flooded roads and being vigilant if living near streams and creeks.
“Periods of moderate to locally heavy precipitation will continue to impact NorCal through Monday,” the weather service says. “When driving in the rain, turn on wipers and headlights, slow down, and increase following distance. Never drive through flooded roads!”
