Stockton’s homicide lull was shattered Sunday night when a man was found suffering from a gunshot wound near Kennedy Elementary School, north of downtown. The man later died, police said.
The shooting occurred about 9 p.m. in the 8600 block of Santa Paula Way. Officers responded to a report that a man was unresponsive, only to find when they arrived that he had been shot. Officers attempted to save the man’s life before an ambulance crew arrived. He was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Homicide detectives are investigating. There was no information yet on a suspect or a motive.
The victim’s name was not released pending notification of next of kin.
Stockton has seen 22 homicides so far this year, compared to 32 at this time a year ago, officers said. The last homicide was July 23 when a 35-year-old man was shot in Stockton’s Seaport District.
