Police in Stockton are asking for the public’s help in gathering information about the fatal shooting of a 24-year-old man on Friday night.
The victim was identified in local news reports as Miguel Tambriz Sohom, who was killed near his home on south Sierra Nevada Street in south Stockton.
Stockton police said they found a man after responding to a report of a shooting and transported him to a local hospital, where he died.
Sohom’s cousin Lorenzo Raymundo told KXTV-TV they were standing outside Sohom’s home when they were “surrounded” by a group of men in what he believed to be a robbery attempt. Raymundo said his cousin was shot while chasing after one of the men involved.
“I’m very sad because my cousin was shot in front of me,” he said.
According to the station, Sohom moved to the U.S. seven years ago from Guatemala and is survived by his wife and a 4-year-old daughter. The family is reportedly raising money for his body to be returned to Guatemala.
“I don’t know how to feel right now,” said Dagoberto Mendoza, the victim’s cousin-in-law. “I know him, and now that I know that he’s gone, his family needs more support. He leaves a daughter of 4 years old, and it’s going to be hard for her without a dad.”
Police told Stocktonia that they have not confirmed a motive; they did not have information regarding a potential suspect.
The department is asking anyone who might have information about the shooting to contact Crime Stoppers at (209) 946-0600, adding that anyone who provides a tip could be eligible for a reward of up to $10,000.
The shooting marks the 20th homicide in the city this year, compared to 24 during the same span in 2025.
