With a boost from high-demand graduate programs, the University of the Pacific reports it enrolled a record number of students.
Some 6,944 enrolled in the university this fall, almost 200 more than last year, which was also a record.
Enrollment is up 15% over the past three years across not only UOP’s main campus in Stockton, but also satellite facilities in Sacramento and San Francisco.
While undergraduate enrollment held steady, some of the most impressive growth came in programs catering to those seeking to enhance their careers.
The School of Health Sciences, for instance, is offering a master’s degree in physician assistant studies. The program has seen such high interest that a new building was opened in Sacramento to help satisfy demand.
Health Sciences, the university’s newest college, is also its fastest growing.
“There is a tremendous need for health-care providers,” Health Sciences Dean Nicoleta Bugnariu said in a statement.
The university also cites increased interest in counseling, psychology, dentistry and law studies.
UOP President Christopher Callahan said the enrollment record reflects growing awareness of the 173-year-old university, not just in the U.S. but around the world. UOP has enrolled students from 44 states and 60 countries.
“Today more and more students across disciplines are uncovering the gem that is Pacific,” Callahan said in a statement.
