Another nationwide protest against President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk was held in Stockton this weekend near San Joaquin Delta College.
With smiles, music and hand-painted signs, locals gathered at the intersection of Pacific and West Yokuts avenues to rally against recent federal policies they deem as harming immigrants and other Americans.
The song “We are family” even rang out across the intersection at one point, while people waved signs and American flags at cars passing by.
“We’re not Billionaires, We’re Americans. We as the people need to fight to protect one another regardless of our background,” said 56-year-old Stockton resident Mark H.
The rally was a continuation from the nationwide Hands Off! protest earlier this month, organized by Dawn Griep, who is quickly becoming a familiar face in local activism. Griep rallied people to demonstrate for the second time this month — this time, in front of Delta College — with hopes of inspiring younger generations to get involved.
“I wholly believe that children are our future, so we have to foster the younger generation as well as everyone else because the Constitution protects everybody,” Griep said.
Those in attendance echoed the focus on unity, while also voicing their frustration over what they deemed as larger political threats. Many attendees and signs cited concerns about the Trump administration, Elon Musk’s growing influence within the political world, and looming fears of Social Security and retirement fund cuts.
“Anytime we use our voice whether it is one person that hears it or the masses— somebody will see it,” said disability advocate Emily Grunder. “Hearing someone else’s story and sharing it will help others notice what is going on and continue to spread it,” they said.
For many protestors, federal policies and decision making aren’t just discussions.
“For those who are in power and have the power to do something — act, community member Adriana Griffith said. “You all took an oath to protect our constitution against everybody; foreign [or] domestic and you’re not doing that right now.”
