Good morning, Stockton.

The city is making another major investment in its police force.

Stockton will spend more than $2 million to expand the Police Department’s fleet of armored vehicles and drones after the City Council approved the purchases. Supporters say the equipment will help officers respond to dangerous situations. The annual report, which is required under state law, offers residents a closer look at what the department plans to buy and why.

In other news, a high-profile Stockton criminal case remains on hold. A scheduled change of plea by former Stockton Mayor Anthony Silva in his federal fraud and identity theft case was postponed, delaying what had been expected to be a significant step in the proceedings.

Drivers across California are seeing higher gas prices after the state’s gas tax increased by 2.2 cents per gallon on July 1, adding to fuel costs that already have spiked in the past year.

We’re also following a story that hits closer to home. Two recent crashes involving cyclists have renewed questions about how safe Stockton’s streets are for people riding bikes through the city.

That’s your morning snapshot. There’s plenty more waiting below.
