Friday didn’t look like a normal school day across parts of the city. Hundreds of Stockton high school students left their classrooms and took to the streets, joining a national shutdown aimed at pressuring leaders to stop funding ICE and pull its agents from communities. In today’s top story, Aaron Leathley and Shaylee Navarro report from the ground on what students say pushed them to raise their voices and how the demonstrations unfolded across Stockton.

There’s more happening locally too. This weekend brings a packed slate of events, from a McKee art show and a Frank Wiens recital to a jiu jitsu tournament and more ways to get out and connect. U.S. Rep. Josh Harder also toured the Stockton ICE facility and said he left frustrated by what he described as “non answers,” while the State Controller’s Office has begun a formal audit of Stockton’s internal control system.
