One student was fatally shot and another was injured in a pistol whipping on Wednesday afternoon near Cesar Chavez High School in Stockton, police said.

The shooting was reported about 3:10 p.m. in the area of Unity Park in the 5500 block of Rayanna Drive, where officers found the victims.

Both were hospitalized and the student who was shot, a 17-year-old boy, died. The other student is in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

The pair were involved in a crime at the park during school hours, said Melinda Meza, spokesperson for the Stockton Unified School District.

People were advised to avoid the area because of the active investigation.
