Police in Stockton on Monday evening released the name of a man shot to death by officers on Sunday night, as well as more information about the altercation.

Police said they responded before 8 p.m. to the area of Hammer Lane and Mariners Drive after receiving a report that a man, now identified as Jaden Durand Mixon, 20, from Antelope, was armed with a gun and had attempted to stop a person’s vehicle near Sturgeon Road and Mariners Drive.

Moments later, police said they received another report of a man running at vehicles in the roadway and the caller said they saw the suspect pointing a handgun at a passing vehicle.

Officers arrived at Hammer Lane and Mariners Drive and located Mixon. Police allege Mixon removed what appeared to be a handgun from his waistband and dropped it on the ground. According to police, Mixon then briefly raised his hands above his head, but then suddenly reached down and grabbed the handgun. Police allege that he then began to run and pointed the gun at the officers.

“At this point, an officer-involved shooting occurred,” said a spokesperson from the Stockton Police Department on social media. “The suspect was struck multiple times.”

The Stockton Police Department has identified two officers involved in the shooting– Gianni Azevedo, who has been on the force since 2019, and Brian Tualla, who was hired in 2021. Both have been placed on paid administrative leave.

Mixon was handcuffed and a police allegedly found a Glock 9mm handgun next to his body. Police said they rendered medical aid to Mixon but when the paramedics arrived, he was pronounced deceased.

No police officers were injured, according to the department. Azevedo and Tualla had both activated their body-worn cameras during the altercation.

A critical incident investigation is underway involving the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office and the county Medical Examiner’s Office, the department said. The police department was also required to notify the California Department of Justice since it was an officer-involved shooting.
