A Stockton police officer shot a man on Saturday who allegedly stabbed his domestic partner, the department said.
According to police, a 911 call came in around 9 a.m. regarding a violent disturbance in the 1500 block of East Eleventh Street. Someone reported that their parents were arguing and that their dad was going to stab their mother.
At this point, police said officer Mark Sonke discharged his firearm at Cruz, critically wounding him. Sonke has been with the department since 2014. The couple were both taken to the hospital.
The woman sustained multiple stab wounds but has since been released. Cruz suffered at least one gunshot wound and remained in critical but stable condition as of Sunday afternoon. Five children in the home were taken to safety, police said.
A critical incident investigation of the officer-involved shooting is being carried out by the department, along with the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office and the California Department of Justice.
