Authorities in Stockton are suspending the search for a teen who jumped in a levee Wednesday afternoon and seemingly disappeared, the school district said.

The search is being called off because of darkness and equipment issues, but it will resume in the morning.

Rescue crews began searching for the teen Wednesday afternoon after they jumped into a levee connected to the Calaveras River near Stagg High School.

According to the district, shortly after 2 p.m., an altercation occurred on campus, and when administrators approached the teenagers, they ran away and jumped in the water.

One teen surfaced but a second teen has not been located.

The Stockton Unified School District Department of Public Safety and the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office initiated the search, which employed a submersible robot.

The district said there will be counselors on campus tomorrow to help students and faculty.

This is a developing story.
