Stockton police arrested a 44-year-old man Tuesday after authorities say he tried to kidnap a girl who was walking to school and then led police on a brief foot chase.

Kenneth Collins was booked on suspicion of attempted kidnapping in the incident, which occurred in the 800 block of north American Street, police said in a post on Facebook.

Authorities said Collins approached the girl just before 8 a.m. and tried to grab her before another person, described only by police as a “witness,” intervened. Collins then fled on foot but was found by officers who responded to the scene.

He tried to run away from officers, who ultimately used a department-issued Taser so Collins could be taken into custody, police said.

He is being held in lieu of $525,000 bail in the San Joaquin County jail and is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
