Stockton police on Tuesday announced an arrest in a fatal shooting from nearly two years ago.
Vincent Chavez, 28, was taken into custody Saturday by San Joaquin County sheriff’s deputies after a traffic stop and booked on suspicion of homicide.
He is suspected in a Feb. 5, 2023, shooting that left one man dead and three others injured.
At the time of the pre-dawn shooting, officers responded to the 1300 block of West Fremont Street and found four men with gunshot wounds. One of the victims, a 42-year-old man, was taken to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries. The other three were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, authorities said at the time.
Police did not indicate how their protracted investigation unfolded or what led them to arrest Chavez. Officers said only that even after the shooting had long faded from public memory, they never gave up efforts in finding a suspect.
“Detectives have continued to work on this case since the homicide occurred,” the department said in a statement. “Detectives conducted extensive follow up and were able to identify a suspect in the case.”
Even with the arrest, however, the case is not considered closed.
“This remains an ongoing investigation,” the department said.
