A Manteca city councilmember shot his stepson Thursday during an altercation at his home that left both men injured, authorities said.
David Breitenbucher, a retired city fire captain who has served in Manteca’s District 3 seat for six years, said he was acting in self-defense when the shooting occurred in the 1000 block of Yolo Street, police said in a statement.
Breitenbucher’s stepson, identified as Landon White, 31, was shot in the abdomen. Breitenbucher suffered a head wound, authorities said. Both were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Officers responded after Breitenbucher called 911 at 12:28 p.m. saying that White, who did not live at the home, had tried to attack him and was threatening to kill him, police said. After Breitenbucher was attacked, he used “his personal firearm to defend himself,” according to the release.
The Manteca Police Department is investigating the incident.
Breitenbucher is serving his second term on the City Council. He was vice mayor in 2019. His most recent term began in 2022.
A graduate of Manteca High School and Delta College, Breitenbucher’s resume on the city’s website shows a wide variety of civic engagement, including serving on committees involved with water, waste management and air pollution.
