A man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after authorities say he struck a woman with an object and set a tent on fire in a Stockton encampment with her inside it.
A 34-year-old woman and the suspect got into an argument around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Myrtle Street and state Highway 99, according to a news release from the Stockton Police Department.
During the argument, police said the man — later identified as Julian Gomez, 31 — struck the woman with an object. She ran into a tent, but Gomez zipped it up and set it on fire, with her inside, authorities said.
The woman, who was not identified, managed to escape from the tent, but Gomez chased after her and assaulted her, according to the police report. She eventually flagged down an officer, who took Gomez into custody.
He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, arson, assault and other outstanding warrants. He is being held in the San Joaquin County Jail without bail and is scheduled to make his first court appearance Thursday, according to booking logs.
