A 17-year-old has died by gunfire in Stockton, police said.

But detectives are trying to determine whether the fatal shooting of Jamal Calbert was intentional or accidental.

Officers with the Stockton Police Department discovered the teen with a gunshot wound early Wednesday in the 600 block of Dovewood Street in the Valley Oak district, a quiet upscale neighborhood on the city’s north side. The call came in about 1:45 a.m.

He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

The San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office identified Calbert as the victim in the shooting, but said his manner of death had not yet been determined.

Police are currently labeling the death as Stockton’s fifth homicide of the year. During the same span in 2024, there had been seven killings.
