A Stockton man was killed in a two-vehicle crash involving a big rig on eastbound Interstate 80 in Vacaville early Tuesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Around 4:20 a.m., a 2016 Mazda stopped on the freeway, blocking an eastbound lane of I-80 east of Leisure Town Road, authorities said. Based on a preliminary investigation, a 2024 Peterbilt 18-wheeler was also traveling east when it crashed into the Mazda, CHP spokesperson Garrett Pumphrey said.

The driver of the Mazda, a 58-year-old Stockton man who has not yet been identified, was killed in the collision. The Peterbilt driver, a 59-year-old Pacifica man, was not injured, CHP officers said.

There were no passengers in either vehicle.

CHP investigators are looking into whether the lights of the Mazda were on at the time of the crash. The driver of the Peterbilt truck is cooperating with law enforcement, Pumphrey said.
