A Stockton man was arrested Thursday in connection with the kidnapping and sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl, police said.

Police have identified the suspect as 41-year-old Dennis Lee.

Officers began investigating after the girl was reported missing Tuesday, police said. Shortly after, a sexual assault was reported. Investigators later determined the two incidents were related.

The girl was walking near West Lane and the Calaveras River when a man forced her into his vehicle and assaulted her, police said. She later escaped when the car stopped in a parking lot and called for help.

Detectives reportedly then registered the suspect’s vehicle in a law enforcement database. On Thursday, Stockton police, along with the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office and the Auto Theft Task Force, located the vehicle and arrested Lee.

Police say Lee was carrying a replica firearm at the time of his arrest.

Lee was booked into San Joaquin County Jail on charges of kidnapping and multiple sexual assault-related offenses. His bail is set at more than $4 million, and he is scheduled to appear in court Monday.

Police said Lee has a criminal history that includes manslaughter, prostitution and sexual assault.

“We are relieved that the victim has been safely located, and we commend her bravery,” Stockton police said in a statement. “We would also like to extend our gratitude to our law enforcement partners for their continued collaboration.”

Officials commended the girl’s bravery and credited officers and detectives for their quick work. Authorities urged anyone with information or possible additional victims to contact Stockton Police or Crime Stoppers
