Police in Stockton arrested a man suspected of setting the fire that decimated a historic building earlier this month, the department said Wednesday.

On June 6, firefighters battled a three-alarm fire at the Commercial Hotel on East Main Street in downtown Stockton. The building has been vacant but dates back to 1875.

Firefighters fought through the night to contain the blaze to just the hotel and not the buildings surrounding it– and managed to do so– but the former hotel underwent significant damage.

Investigators found the fire suspicious, police said, and ultimately a suspect was identified.

Stockton resident Lucio Carrillo, 37, was located on June 19 and arrested.  Carillo is being held without bail on suspicion of felony arson and vandalism, as well as warrants from other counties for violating his probation and trespassing.
