A 19-year-old man was killed and a 17-year-old was wounded as the result of a shooting early Monday in Stockton’s Caldwell Park, police said.

Officers arriving shortly after midnight at the park in the 3100 block of Allston Way found both the victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

Both were rushed to an area hospital where the 19-year-old was pronounced dead, officers said. The younger victim was reported to be in stable condition.

Though overall homicides are down, the city has seen a rash of young men being killed this year, some of them in parks.

The dead man’s identity was being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The name of the wounded victim, a juvenile, was also not released.

Police said they have no information on suspects or motive at this time. The case has been turned over to detectives. They ask anyone with information on the case to phone the city’s anonymous tip line, Stockton Crime Stoppers, at 209-946-0600.

The killing marked the 23rd homicide this year, compared to 33 at the same time last year.
