A person pushing a shopping cart in the darkened lanes of Interstate 5 was struck and killed early Thursday near French Camp Road by a hit-and-run driver, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The pedestrian “sustained obvious signs of fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased” following the 4:35 a.m. collision in the northbound lanes, the CHP’s Stockton office said.
It appears that after the person was struck, other drivers may have also run into the victim, authorities said.
The San Joaquin County Medical Examiner’s Office said the name of the victim was being withheld pending notification of next of kin. It was not disclosed whether the person was a man or woman.
Officers said they have no description of the hit-and-run suspect’s vehicle. They also were unable to determine the vehicle’s speed at the time of the collision.
The victim was found between the two lanes closest to the median. An investigation prompted closure of the northbound lanes of the freeway for about 90 minutes Thursday morning, the CHP said.
