Kathryn Nance, a former deputy chief with the Stockton Police Department, was ousted Tuesday as head of the police force in Reno, Nevada.

Reno City Manager Jackie Bryant announced in a video posted by the Reno Gazette-Journal that Nance and two assistant chiefs “are no longer employed” by the city. She said the decision to replace the three “was not made lightly.”

Nance had been on administrative leave amid allegations of misconduct that violated department policies, though the nature of the probe was not revealed.

The veteran law enforcement officer took over as Reno’s police chief in February 2023 after being named a finalist months earlier.

While in Stockton, Nance was responsible for a $107 million budget as deputy chief of operations. She also served as Stockton’s deputy chief of logistics. She joined the Stockton Police Department in 1996, rising to captain in 2019 and deputy chief in 2020. She had been a finalist for Stockton’s top cop job before Stanley McFadden was hired in 2022.

Stockton police officials previously said they were aware of the allegations in Reno against Nance, but said they had no plans to conduct any investigations here.

Bryant announced that Washoe County, Nevada, Undersheriff Corey Solferino will become the city’s next police chief, pending approval by the Reno City Council.
