A Stockton truck driver has been arrested after authorities say he fled the scene of a collision on Interstate 80 that killed the driver of a pickup truck, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Robert Bell, 60, was located and arrested in Martinez last week. He was booked into the Placer County Jail on suspicion of hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter, both felonies, the CHP said.

On May 26, a commercial vehicle traveling west on I-80 struck the center divider near Clipper Gap, a tiny community northeast of Auburn, the CHP said. The truck’s trailer detached as a result of the crash and jumped into the eastbound lanes of traffic, where it collided with an F-150 pickup, killing its driver.

In the aftermath of the crash, officers say the driver — later identified as Bell — ran away rather than staying at the scene and trying to render aid.

The case was investigated by the Placer County Regional Auto Theft Task Force and the CHP’s Auburn office.

“This arrest represents the tireless dedication of our investigators and allied law enforcement partners to seek justice for the victim and their family,” Capt. Andy Beasley, commander of the CHP Auburn Area, said in a statement.
