Stocktonia is teaming up with CalMatters, a nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization covering the state, and San Joaquin Delta College to host “VotingMatters: Ballots & Burritos,” a voter education event aimed at informing and engaging the community on state ballot propositions and local elections.
The event will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 23 at Danner Hall on the Delta College campus. Attendees will be treated to free burritos, courtesy of CalMatters.
As part of a statewide voter education series led by CalMatters, the event is one of many being held at community colleges across California, including Cabrillo College, Lake Tahoe Community College and Contra Costa College, among others. The goal is to break down this year’s key state ballot propositions and discuss local San Joaquin County races.
CalMatters reporters will provide an overview of the ballot propositions, while Stocktoniaโs team will cover local races, offering attendees an opportunity to engage in dialogue about the issues that matter most to them. Stocktonia reporters will use the most common questions and themes to shape their interviews with candidates in the upcoming elections.
Delta College political science professor Joel Blank and Ricky Gutierrez-Maldonado, director of student activities, also will be present, along with the Office of Student Life and the Associated Students of Delta College, which will help attendees register to vote.
RSVPs are required to attend this free event, open to all students and community members. RSVP by Sept. 20.

The VotingMatters event kicks off a week of election-focused events, including a series of candidate forums at Delta College. Starting on Sept. 24, the forums will feature candidates for State Assembly District 13, San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors District 1 and State Senate District 5. On Sept. 25, the forums will include candidates for Stockton mayor and Stockton City Council Districts 4 and 6. The final forum, on Sept. 26, will cover candidates for Stockton Unified School District Area 4. All forums will be held at the Dawn Mabalon Forum on the Delta College campus.
