A San Joaquin County judge has sentenced a man for elder abuse and assault, the office of San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas announced. Bashir Zakria was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison after he pleaded guilty to elder abuse and assault charges, prosecutors said.
Zakria admitted to attacking an 81-year-old homeowner during a series of burglaries in Tracy on Feb. 11, 2023, authorities noted.
He also pleaded guilty to assaulting another inmate while in custody and acknowledged two prior strike convictions, the press release issued Monday said.
“The elderly in our community deserve to feel safe in their homes. This sentence sends a clear message that violent crimes against our most vulnerable will not be tolerated,” District Attorney Ron Freitas said, emphasizing the significance of the sentencing in protecting vulnerable members of the community.
