Three weeks into the new year, Stockton police have new homicide to solve — or they think they do.

Officers were called about 7:30 p.m. Sunday to a local hospital, where a young man suffering from a gunshot wound had been dropped off. The man later died, according to a release from the Police Department.

On Tuesday, the San Joaquin County medical examiner’s office identified the victim as Daniel Ledesma, a 20-year-old Galt resident.

But because detectives don’t know where Ledesma was shot, they are not sure whether the homicide is their case.

“It is of note that the location of occurrence is still undetermined. It could have very well happened outside our city,” Officer Omer Edhah, a spokesperson for the Police Department, said.

If the fatal shooting did occur in the city limits, it’s the second homicide of the year, coming almost three weeks after a fatal shooting on New Year’s Day.

In that instance, police responding to the 2400 block of Gareth Circle in Stockton’s Valley Oak section found a 47-year-old woman who had been mortally wounded. She was rushed to a hospital, where she died.

The medical examiner’s office identified the victim as Stockton resident Latoya Scrivens.

Authorities later identified the suspect in the slaying as Jkwon Williams, the victim’s son. Williams, 20, was charged with voluntary manslaughter and using a firearm in the commission of a felony.

San Joaquin County Chief Deputy District Attorney Elizabeth O’Hara said that Williams shot a gun inside a car, resulting in the death of his mother, according to news reports at the time. Williams, who did not enter a plea during his first appearance and was not granted bail, is due back in court Feb. 3, according to news reports.

Stockton police reported 54 homicides in 2024, up from 45 in 2023. Despite the increase, former City Manager Harry Black said violent crime in the city has fallen.
