A fugitive wanted in connection with the double homicide of a woman and her teenage son in Stockton was arrested in Mexico, police said.

After a nearly two-month manhunt, Julio Valdez was located in Rosarito, Mexico, where he was taken into custody by members of the U.S. Marshals Task Force and the Mexico Regional Police, Stockton police said in a news release.

He is in the process of being extradited to San Joaquin County, authorities said.

Valdez was wanted in connection with the Dec. 23 slayings of Alice Montejano, 43, and her 19-year-old son, Reuel Huerta.

Police discovered the bodies of Montejano and Huerta about 11 p.m., two days before Christmas. Officers responded to the 2500 block of Belleview Avenue on a report of two unresponsive people. When they arrived, they found the mother and son dead at the scene.

Valdez, 38, knew the victims, authorities said, and the motive in the slayings appeared to be domestic-related.

The crime appeared to be especially vicious, police said at the time, noting that Montejano had been battered and her son had been cut.

A manhunt was quickly launched for Valdez, with an initial reward of up to $10,000 for information about his whereabouts. A month later, the reward was increased to $35,000.
