Stockton police are cracking down on prostitution.

A recent sweep netted more than two dozen suspected prostitutes and customers as well as one person accused of pimping, authorities said.

Officers conducted what they called “a high-visibility, zero-tolerance enforcement operation” on March 7 in two areas. One was in the vicinity of Navy Drive and south Argonaut Street, and the other was along a stretch of Sierra Nevada Street.

Nineteen people suspected of engaging in prostitution were cited, police said. Officers also conducted seven traffic stops and cited each of the suspected customers. All were cited and released — still considered a form of arrest — but they were not booked into jail, police said.

However, one person believed to be a pimp was arrested and booked into the San Joaquin County Jail.

In addition to the citations, officers offered each person involved in the sweep “resources through victim-witness representatives to assist them in leaving the lifestyle.”

Two accepted the assistance, police said.
