Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday ordered the flags at the state Capitol flown at half-staff to honor the death of San Joaquin County sheriff’s Sgt. Jason Whelen, who suffered a fatal medical emergency while on duty earlier this week.
The flags were also lowered at the Capitol’s Annex Swing Space, according to Newson’s order.
“Sergeant Whelen dedicated his life to public service, and that commitment came with extraordinary courage and sacrifice,” Newsom said in a statement. “Jennifer and I are deeply heartbroken for his loss and we hold his family, loved ones, and colleagues in our prayers during this time. We honor his service to protect his community with profound gratitude.”
Whelen, a 19-year veteran of the department, experienced a medical emergency during his shift Tuesday, officials announced.
“Despite the immediate response and extensive life-saving efforts by fellow deputies and medical personnel, Sergeant Whelen tragically passed away,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
Whelen, 40, began his career with the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office in the fall of 2007 as a deputy, before being promoted to sergeant in 2013.
“Throughout his career, he served this community with honor, integrity, and compassion,” the department said.
Officials said Whelen is remembered for his kindness, steady leadership, deep faith in Jesus Christ and an infectious smile that brought positivity to those around him.
“Our thoughts are with Sergeant Whelen’s family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time,” officials said.
